Most drivers aren't even aware they make these 3 mistakes

Distracted driving aside, some drivers are still ignorant about driving mistakes they make every day. The following three driving habits are all too common and can easily cause an accident.

Not turning into the closest lane

This mistake is actually a traffic violation. Whether turning left or right, drivers should always pull into the lane that is closest to them. That means if you're taking a left-hand turn into a road that has a left and a right lane, you should enter into the left lane.

Drivers who turn left and enter the slow (right) lane can easily collide into a driver on the opposite side of the intersection who is taking a right-hand turn into the same lane. Always stay in your lane until you have turned on your blinker and it's safe to merge over.

Braking instead of easing off the gas

While this mistake isn't illegal, it can easily lead to "stop-and-go" traffic. This happens when a driver alternates between stopping their vehicle and accelerating quickly, instead of simply staying off the gas pedal and letting the vehicle creep along in traffic.

Stop-and-go traffic often leads to rear-end collisions when drivers don't realize how fast they should be traveling or how soon they'll need to stop.

To avoid this, practice taking your foot off of the gas pedal to get an idea of how this will slow down the car in comparison to using the brakes. Also try to practice gradual breaking, instead of sudden stops.

Pulling over when a police car is going the opposite direction

If you see or hear a police car emerging behind you, you must merge out of their way and pull over. However, if the police car is traveling in the opposite direction, it makes no sense to slow down and pull over. This behavior does not aid the police but can disrupt the flow of traffic and cause an accident if other vehicles are maintaining their speed.

If an accident happens

If you are involved in an accident caused by a driver who made one of these mistakes, they may not even be aware they were doing anything wrong. Working with an experienced attorney can help you prove your injury or damage claim and collect compensation from a negligent driver.
